The glossy and perfectly smooth surfaces on Greg Bogin’s paintings can often belie the artist’s complex, multi-step process. Each piece begins as a small doodle, which in turn becomes a large pencil drawing and color study. Greg custom-makes all his own stretchers in his studio to ensure the integrity of each unique shape. The canvas is carefully prepared sanding between each coat of gesso before the color is applied, finishing the piece with a layer of urethane, flat for white and gloss for color. “Happier Place” is a photograph of a completed painting. The shading highlights the unique form of the canvas, making it appear to almost hover in space.
